Shaken - not stirred

Traditionally a tall metal container with a friction-attached top with a capped strainer, cocktail shakers can now come in a number of shapes, sizes and materials. In every case, they are designed to allow you to add liquids and (usually) ice and shake them together to mix and chill before pouring. The integrated strainer in the top allows you to separate a liquid from the ice (e.g., when pouring a martini up, you are able to leave the ice in the shaker and pour only the martini into the glass). Shakers can also be used for other items, including as a hip presentation for cold soups.
